Online Career Education

In some areas of specialization, common words are used differently than most of us would normally use them. In the field of education, for example, “career-oriented education” does not include such advanced degree occupations as doctor, lawyer or MBA, despite the fact that they make for excellent, high-paying degrees. Now that the Internet is an accepted part of the education establishment, more people are becoming aware of what an online career education really is.

There are many trade and specialty schools that offer alternatives to the usual four-year-college approach — and differ from the online colleges as well. These are the purveyors of online career education, meaning such areas as photography, graphic design, fashion, computer networking and repair, gourmet cooking, hotel management and other trades.

Certificates versus degrees

Numerous occupations, including those mentioned already, are open to persons with little or no training, who are willing to learn “on the job” or be apprenticed to other, more experienced people. On the other hand, online career education has developed as an alternative to on-the-job training, offering businesses the opportunity to hire employees who are prepared, and certified, in certain trades and disciplines.

One career education company, for example, has some 80 campuses in the United States, Canada, France and the United Kingdom, and also offers courses online. Their various schools — specializing in photography, design and computers — have acquired an excellent reputation, which means that the certificates that they award students have standing with businesses and employers in many countries. An online career education undertaken at such an institution would have real, tangible value for someone entering a new line of work, or hoping to advance in a current one.

When people make up their minds to advance themselves and their living situation, one of the first things they think of is education. Education is by far the most effective way to increase one’s earning power and social standing, and the figures comparing the lifetime wages of a high-school graduate to persons with educational certificates or college degrees are both well known and compelling.
Someone with a natural talent in, say, graphic design would be well advised to pursue online career education in the field, especially if a four-year college program were either not possible or, just as important, not required for career advancement. Combining an existing talent with solid, educational credentials is a great way for anyone to break out of a dead-end job, or a period of unemployment, and find personal fulfillment right along with a good paycheck.
